“Rain of Ashes” – new play at Metro Arts
Brisbane takes up where “One Thousand and One Nights” left off -
Niz Jabour.
Based on the classic Arabian tale, "One Thousand and One
Nights", the play weaves together the threads of a long journey,
taking in aspects of the cultures of Iraq, Turkey, Iran,
Pakistan, India and Australia

Director Niz Jabour
moves forward to "1002 Nights" as King Shahryar is awakened from
death by conflicts and destruction.
"1001 Arabian Nights" was compiled between the twelfth and
fourteenth centuries, and tells of King Shahryar's betrayal by
an adulterous wife, and his subsequent vengeful decree: that
he'll marry a new virgin each night and have her executed the
next day.
But eventually the vizier's daughter Shaherezade offers herself
as a bride, with a plan: to tell a story each night—stopping
just before dawn at the moment of greatest suspense, so that the
king is desperate to hear more, and spares her life. In this
way, she narrates the tales of '1001 nights'.
The king becomes fascinated and spares her, to crown her queen.
In the contemporary play "Rain of Ashes", King Shahryar
realises that the dreams of the oldest city have changed--and so
he becomes the storyteller rather than the listener.
Through personal and collective stories, using mime, body
movement, live music and songs, "Rain of Ashes" will weave
together the threads of a long journey, taking in aspects of the
cultures of Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and Australia.
The play will be performed by Joaquin Poven-Gonzalez, Yvonne
Roworth, Mahmod Taj, Agnieszka Niemira, Jasim Al-Ghatat and Niz
Jabour.
The performance runs from 11-13 October at Metro Arts Studio,
109 Edward Street, Brisbane, At 8 pm. Every one welcome or
Tickets by donation at the door.
'Rain of Ashes' is fully supported and sponsored by
